Mercedes Schlapp, the White House strategist for communications, has a tough job. She's faced with the president, who acts as his own director of communications as well as numerous legal fights which could disrupt the strategy of communication for the administration and a number of Cabinet secretaries caught up in their own controversies. Yet, through all of it Schlapp is focused on the mission in hand and has worked closely with White House's political as well as legislative affairs and policy shops as in the larger communication operation in order to oversee policy implementations. To date, her focus has been on topics such as safety in schools as well as the opioid epidemic infrastructure, trade along with other issues. The current position she holds doesn't require much contact with reporters. The month of March was when she garnered some attention after her name came up as a possible contender for the job of succeeding Hope Hicks in the role of director of communications. There has been a lot of fighting. The ally of Schlapp's, Tony Sayegh, and another candidate for the position, also named Tony, have been fighting during the media coverage. Schlapp claimed that after the Washington Examiner ran a story which contained negative criticisms of Sayegh she had a conversation with Sayegh.
